On my gray whale adventure in Baja a couple months ago, I ran into internationally renowned photographer/naturalist, Roger Neckles. We had last seen each other at the same place in 1998!!! Roger is a native of Trinidad, although raised in London, he returned to his home country at age 21, and has been there ever since. We put out heads together and designed this wildlife adventure that we know you will love !!

Not only will we have the time of our lives in this tropical paradise, but we'll learn a lot from Roger, and rather than being on a "tourist trip", we'll be immersed right into a local's island life with access to great local food and secret natural sites.
Roger's photos have been published in most of North America's prestigious natural history publications, including National Geographic, Birding, Natural History, Audubon, to name a few. He is also an instructor, so if you'd like to improve the quality of your photos, here is the time and place!

Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) are a twin island state, the most southerly islands of the West Indian island chain ~ just 6.8 miles off the northeastern coast of Venezuela. In fact, it was part of Venezuela until it broke off just 11,000 years ago! Therefore, it enjoys many of the mainland's biodiversity with world renowned species such as Macaws, Humingbirds, Toucans, Flamingos, and Monkeys. And, over 700 species of butterflies!!
T&T is also the birth place of Steelpan, the most unique and versatile instrument of modern times, and we'll have an opportunity to experience it firsthand!

We'll be staying in Trinidad five nights at an eco-operated forest lodge on the edge of the rainforest. The wildlife is abundant and the atmosphere welcoming, as are the people of Trinidad. From our lodge, one day, we'll visit world famous Caroni Swamp to see Trinidad's National Bird, the Scarlet Ibis, coming to roost by the thousands!
We'll go to the largest natural tar pit in the world, the La Brea Pitch Lake, and check out some of the natural flora and fauna, such as butterflies and birds. We'll drive into Chaguaramas National Park, in search of the Red Howler and Tufted Capuchin Monkeys. And, we'll explore Port of Spain, Trinidad's capital, taking a swim in Maracas Bay and enjoying some of the island's world-class food, a fusion of Creole, East Indian, Arabic, European, and South American influences! After taking a short 20-minute flight, we'll spend the next three nights in Tobago, staying at the world famous Cuffie River Nature Lodge, the most unforgettable lodge in all of Trinidad and Tobago! Again, we'll be doing day trips: to the oldest rain forest reserve in the western hemisphere, one day, and to Little Tobago Island another, where we'll experience one of the world's most exotic seabirds, the Red Billed Tropicbird, and red-footed boobies, and Magnificent Frigate birds! We'll also enjoy a boat ride to Nylon Pool, a world famous sandbank in the Caribbean Sea where the warm, tropical water is just waist high, a unique natural wonder! Tobago is a healing place, where nature rejuvenates us ~ we'll feel at one with nature and the friendly people here!

This adventure is for those who love nature, as we will be completely immersed in it ~ or as the Japanese say, we'll be "forest bathing", which is a national requirement there for mental health (see this great article on the quantitative benefits of nature, from Outside Magazine). And, we'll be having a great deal of fun, playing in the warm Caribbean Sea, on white sandy beaches, in a delightful and colorful culture. If you're a birder, this is for you! If you are a photographer, Roger is a great teacher, and you'll have the attention of a master. But if, like me, you just get re-charged in nature, then this is a trip of a lifetime! Space is limited to 8 guests.
